Healthy Church Board Governance: What Clarity Makes Possible (Copy)

A couple of years ago, I was talking with a pastor friend who leads a church of about 400 people.

I was telling him about the work we were doing with church boards. We often spend a year or more alongside a church helping the board and senior pastor get clear about governance, decision-making, accountability, and ultimately, who is responsible for what.

He asked me a pretty simple question:

“Why don’t you put this in a digital format so hundreds or thousands of churches could have access to it?”

That was about all it took to convince me.

We got to work, and today I’m excited that the Healthy Church Board Masterclass is available to churches everywhere.

Healthy boards shouldn’t only be accessible to large churches.

I love consulting with churches.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about sitting around a table with a pastor and board, working through the hard conversations, clearing up years of confusion, and watching everyone begin to understand their role differently.

But I’ve also spent enough time around the Church to know that most churches will never hire a consultant to spend a year helping them rebuild their governance.

And I kept thinking about those churches.

The church of 100.

The church of 300.

The pastor leading a growing church of 800 who knows their current structure isn’t going to take them where they believe God is calling them next.

Every church has a board. And every one of those boards has the potential to either create greater clarity for the mission or greater complexity around it.

That’s why we wanted to take what we’ve learned through years of working directly with pastors and boards and make it available in a format churches could work through themselves.

Clarity changes the way a board leads.

Most unhealthy board dynamics don’t start because somebody has bad intentions.

They start because nobody is quite sure where the lines are.

Who makes this decision?

Does the board need to approve that?

How much freedom should the senior pastor have?

How does the board stay informed without getting involved in day-to-day ministry?

What does accountability actually look like?

Without clarity, those questions eventually create tension.

With clarity, the board can spend less energy managing the organization and more energy protecting the mission, supporting the pastor, stewarding resources, and providing the right kind of accountability.

That’s what we want to help churches build.

Introducing the Healthy Church Board Masterclass

We designed the Healthy Church Board Masterclass to feel like LeadingSmart is sitting with you in your boardroom, even when we can’t physically be there.

The course includes nine core lessons covering the foundational principles we use when helping churches build healthier governance.

Each lesson is intentionally short enough to incorporate into a normal board meeting, with a professionally designed workbook, reflection questions, practical tools, and resources to help your board move from simply watching content to actually having the conversations that matter.

You can work through one lesson at a time during your board meetings or use the Masterclass as the foundation for a board retreat.

Either way, our goal isn’t to give you a perfect governance model to copy. It’s to help your board gain enough clarity that your governance supports the mission rather than distracting from it.

And because accessibility was one of the reasons we created this in the first place, we offer special pricing for churches with an average in-person attendance of 200 or less. If that’s your church, reach out to our team. We don’t want budget to keep a smaller church from taking a healthy next step.

How healthy is your board?

If you’re not sure where your board stands today, start there.

We created the Board Health Assessment as a free tool to help pastors and board members evaluate their current health across the areas we believe matter most.

Have your board members take it individually, compare the results, and use the differences as a conversation starter.

You may discover you’re healthier than you thought.

You may also discover that everyone around the table has a very different understanding of how well your board is functioning.

Either way, the data gives you somewhere to begin.
