The Right Team is Everything
You’ve heard Jim Collins’ analogy of getting the right people on the bus in the right seats? I’ve long believed the right team can solve any problem. The right team can help the bus get to the destination, can tackle unanticipated obstacles along the way, and can even help the bus divert if it’s not heading to the right place.
I’d rather have the right team sitting in the woods with nothing but paper than to have the wrong team and all the newest facilities, equipment and technology in the world.
And it was that type of A-team that first attracted me to SoChurch. My initial thought, frankly, was, “Who needs another software program for churches?” Then when I heard the team that was involved–I immediately leaned in. With a team that includes John Saddington, Ben Forsberg, Craig Van Korlaar and Jonathan Cottrell–you’ve got my attention. Throw in the Advisory Board that includes Kem Meyer, Tony Morgan, Ben Arment, and a couple other big names you’ll hear about in coming weeks–and now I’m really intrigued!
I can hear you saying, “SoChurch? So What!” What the heck is SoChurch? Well, it’s a technology-solution to help you communicate with the people in your church. It doesn’t revolutionize the way you communicate–it just pulls it all together in one solution, and helps you do it so much better. How many times does someone in your congregation say, “I didn’t know about…” or “How do I find out about…” or “Where can I get information about…”? How many times do the leaders say, “How do we tell everyone about…”?
The problem with most solutions available now–they aren’t scalable. They tend to be written by people attached to mega-churches–and they are priced for and work best in the mega-church environment. Nothing wrong with that. But what excites me about SoChurch is that it is scalable from the smallest group or house-church to the largest church.
That’s why I’ve signed on to be a part of the Advisory Team for SoChurch–and can’t wait for this product to release later this year.
Here’s a screenshot you haven’t seen (fyi-this is a high fidelity wireframe, but lacks the fit and finish the final product will have). Imagine if every group in your church had this level of organic conversation in a place that was centrally connected to (and integrated with) your church’s mission and vision as a whole.

For those of you who cant swim, when you finally get in the water you will find that it can be quite inviting. Don't sit out on this. Engage in it.
Like the world, the internet can be a cold dark hard place. The nice thing about this is you find out that your not alone and it can be an excellent tool for connecting to others. Ask a question, insert a small note or comment. Step on out its a great ice breaker for your own heart and relationships.
It may just help us take our next steps toward Christ.

Tim, you explained SoChurch very well.
Cannot wait until the release. Glad you are on the team.

Tim, the team is only stronger because of your involvement. Thank you for you contributions and this great post.

Don't mean to be a debbie-downer… but I'm still not very clear from this post about what sochurch will be for. How will it integrate with a church's current site? When will alpha and beta testing be opened up? Also, from the screenshot, am I to assume it's built on tumblr, or is that just a placeholder graphic?
jonathancottrell
Sam, these are good questions. While we're releasing information piece-by-piece, to give you some inklings, here are some answers for you…
How will it integrate with a church's current site? We are very much for integration. That said, 62% of churches do not even have a website according to the most extensive church study data in 2007. We are looking to meet the needs of those churches as well.
When will alpha and beta testing be opened up? Email craig@sochurch.com to be put on the invite list. We are launching in the latter half of 2010.
Also, from the screenshot, am I to assume it's built on tumblr, or is that just a placeholder graphic? Good eye! That is a high fidelity wireframe, though, and just serving as a placeholder for now. It will be a custom-built solution, with tons of integrations into other systems.

Very intrigued by this. The vacuum principle is in play since details are bare, but I'm having a hard time getting excited without more details especially platform, integration and price. I know that all will be made known soon, but is there something more out there to guide us?
jonathancottrell
Paul, to give you a rough idea…
The integrations will be deep and rooted in the very core of the application. It will integrate with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Vimeo, Scribd, Google Maps, and another half-dozen APIs that we will be releasing details about over time.
Regarding price, I can't give specifics yet, but what I can tell you is that for the number of other tools and technologies that SoChurch will replace, we will be saving churches upwards of 80% per month. I hope that gets you excited.
If you're interested in more details that we would be happy to share privately, email craig@sochurch.com for a taste. Thanks for your interest and comment, Paul. Hope that gets you more excited.

This is exciting to me, as a member and volunteer at GCC, because I want a way to connect to people in the church that I may not have a chance to meet on a Saturday evening and this sounds like a solution! I think it'd be great if we could all be connected not just while in church or at a church function but also while at home or some place far away. Glad you're part of the team!
jonathancottrell
Tina, this is definitely a solution for that. We look forward to seeing the success that GCC will have in implementing the solution. Thanks for the comment!
