"I’ve been to churches in which the pastors do everything and the church members see it as their responsibility to warm the pews and “keep the pastor accountable.""

Perhaps the pastor dictates the culture. Similar to the mother whose kids don't do anything - they don't do 'it' as well as the mother, they don't do 'it' the same as the mother and often the mother actually DEFINES herself by all the things she does. ( Often these mothers are the ones who complain most about the kids doing nothing)

Suggested reading: The Necessary Revolution - by Peter Senge - nothing to do with church but heaps to do with life and organisations etc etc.

Great post! I remember the day when I was pastor, teacher, song leader, janitor, greeter, cook, bus driver...they wanted me to do everything except take up the offering lol! Thanks for you insight and I agree, we need to get the people in the pew engaged!

Whenever we have enough of anything (money, food, health, staff, stuff, etc.), it is the human tendency to become self-sufficient. We forget we need God. Many times it takes a drought to get us focused on what is most important again.<br />

Best line: "Not having enough staff is a good thing. It forces us to our knees." Right, because if you have "enough" staff, then you don't need God.
